Bioplastic is a material that can decompose into water, CO2 and living mass under the influence of the environment and microorganisms. To increase the degradability of traditional plastic (fuel-based plastic), starch is mix into the fuel base. The aim is to decrease the ratio of fuel and to increase the biodegradability of the compound, thus limiting pollution caused by nondegradable plastic waste.
Background
/ Description
The main component of bioplastic is Polylactide (PLA), a lactic acid
compound found in vegetable and similar organic materials. The properties of
PLA are very similar to those of PET (common fuel-based plastic); both contain
polymer structures. Therefore, PLA plastic is just as strong and flexible as
common plastic.
Presently, bioplastic consists of three types:
- Bio-based biodegradable
bioplastics: This type of plastic
is made from renewable resources, primarily vegetable, and degrades naturally
in normal environment. Generally, products made from biodegradable
bioplastic are used to make food wrapping, water bottles, and single-use food
containers.
- Bio-based
non-biodegradable bioplastics: This type of plastic is also made from
renewable resources, but is designed specifically to prolong shelf-life, such
as biothreads or bio-containers. Using bio-based non-biodegradable bioplastics
helps conserving fuel and still ensuring durability. However, the problem of
pollution still remains.
- Petrochemical-based
biodegradable bioplastics: This
type of plastic composes of microbes. Currently, it is mainly used in the
medical field to produce sterile protection equipments.
